What materials are used in Scribble?

The seed tray is made from powder coated stainless steel accompanied by a Corten steel roof and timber perch rails.

What is Corten steel? Will it rust away?

Corten, also known as Weathering steel, is known for its superior corrosion resistance. The surface of the steel forms a protective oxide layer when exposed to the weather which causes the beautiful rusty patina. Apart from creating an interesting design feature, this protective surface layer continues to regenerate over years of exposure to the elements and never requires painting and other treatments.

I’ve heard feeding wild birds isn’t good for them. Is that true?

While many countries around the world actively encourage feeding wild birds to support them, in Australia it can be a controversial and sensitive topic.  Our priority is always the wellbeing of our beautiful native birds therefore we recommend following these rules when feeding birds in your garden:

  • Treat the feeding as a snack, not a meal. Provide only small amounts of food to still allow birds to get the bulk of their diet the natural and best way.
  • Keep your feeder clean. You eat each meal on a new plate and so should the birds. Old leftover food can become mouldy or encourage pests and should be cleaned away and disposed of responsibly.
  • Keep it simple. Avoid processed food (including mincemeat or bread) or anything that contains salt or sugar. A quality commercially available feed is best.
  • Change up the menu and timing to keep it interesting.

And importantly, remember that the feeders are really for us, rather than the birds.

Are there other ways I can attract birds to my garden?

Absolutely. While Birdlife Australia don’t encourage feeding, they have some great suggestions for making your garden a bird friendly environment.

The Nature Conservancy Australia also has some great tips.

Is there anything else I can do to support our local bird life?

Supporting and protecting our native birdlife, wildlife and insects doesn’t just have to centre on feeding birds. It’s important to protect natural habitats, plant native trees and shrubs, control pets, avoid pesticides and minimise use of plastic.

These are just a few of many organisations in Australia that do fantastic work protecting and preserving our natural fauna and flora:
