Join us counting in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count
Hi Scribblers,
Our favourite time of the year is almost here….(and no we don’t mean Christmas – that’s still a whole 68 days away…wait what?!).
National Bird Count week starts tomorrow, 19th October, and runs until 25th October. It’s super easy for anyone to join in and you can count from anywhere, your backyard, schoolyard, local park or any other outdoor space.
Last year over 88,000 Australians counted almost 3.4 millions birds with the Rainbow Lorikeet, Noisy Miner and the Australian Magpie being the most counted bird.
Given the devastating bushfires last summer and their impact on our Australian wildlife, this year’s annual count of birds is more important than ever.
You don’t need any special equipment and each count takes just 20 mins.
All you need to do to get involved is:
- Log on to aussiebirdcount.org.au and register as an individual, an organisation, a school or group
- Or download the Aussie Bird Count app on either the Apple or Google stores
- Take 20 minutes out your day to note any birds you see
- Log those birds into the app
- Give yourself a high five for contributing to the protection of our beautiful Australian birdlife!
It’s ok if you’re a newbie and just learning about birds, the Aussie Bird Count app has a great field guide to help identify birds.
This can also be a great activity to get your kids interested in our birdlife and organise a count at your kinder or school.
Happy counting!
